Jill
Jill lives with Rasmussen encephalitis, a rare neurological condition that causes severe seizure disorders. When she was just 9 years old, doctors determined that the left side of her brain needed to be removed in order to control her seizures. Between the ages of 9 and 13, Jill underwent five separate brain surgeries. Following the surgeries, Jill had to relearn how to read, write, walk, and talk. Once right-hand dominant, she now lives with partial paralysis on her right side. Jill experiences multiple types of seizures, including grand mal, absence seizures, and pseudo seizures — yet she continues to live her life with determination and resilience. Now 50 years old, Jill lives independently in her own apartment with her cat and continues to inspire others through her story, which has been shared in the news and within the disability community. Her journey serves as a powerful reminder to children and young adults living with disabilities that progress, independence, and growth are always possible. During this adventure, Jill visited the Alaska SeaLife Center for the first time, eager to learn more about aquatic life and experience something new. This film highlights not only her curiosity and joy, but also the strength that comes from perseverance and lifelong learning.
“I thought that the experience was enlightening. As an adult with a disability; I was super happy that people talked with me, rather than at me. That people experienced my excitement and joy. I was thrilled that people laughed with me.When I was asked questions regarding my disability, that I was able to explain things from my point of view. To be able to tell people my story. I took away knowledge from the adventure regarding sealife as a whole. I learned things about marine life, that I never would have thought of. It gave me the courage to ask questions, as I didn't feel judged. It was honestly the best experience of my life! ” - Jill
